The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
