In a move that mixes financial support with a clear warning, Washington has committed $2 billion to support United Nations humanitarian operations. However, this aid came with a blunt message for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Major Pledge Amid Wider Funding Cuts
The funding announcement was declared amid major cuts in US funding for humanitarian operations. Additional reductions are expected from other major contributors including Britain and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the statement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"These funds will save millions of lives," stated the United Nations' relief coordinator. Yet, this amount constitutes just a small portion of the United States' historical contributions, which were estimated at around $17 billion just a few years ago.
Aid Accompanied by Specific Conditions
The latest American funding comes with unconditional. It is earmarked for only seventeen nations, including Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Notably, Afghanistan and Yemen have been denied funding.
The US official explained this decision by pointing to evidence that in Afghanistan, aid money were being diverted to the Taliban. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of taxpayers' money supporting organizations designated as terrorists," he asserted.
Furthermore, the restrictions prohibit funding for initiatives related to tackling climate change, deemed not "life saving" and against "American interests."

Issuing a direct warning, the representative told the UN that it must "adapt or die." He stated that the American "piggy bank is not open to agencies that just want to return to previous methods."
He, a known mastermind behind the closure of USAID, pressed for focused and efficient funding that avoids overlap between programs. The relief coordinator and the wider UN system have expressed wholehearted support for efficiency and focus, noting that wise spending is in everyone's interest, especially the hundreds of millions people caught in crises.
